Paranormal activity has also been detected in New Westminster Canada at Glenbrook Ravine Park, Met Hotel, and the Keg Restaurant

BC Penitentiary New Westminster

One of the best known landmarks in New Westminster was the BC Penitentiary which closed in 1980. Only the original Gaol Hall built in 1878 was preserved after being sold to developers. While the empty buildings were still standing, faces of inmates were seen looking out the windows of their jail cells. In the housing development that was built on the property, residents have seen apparitions and spotted numerous orbs (an orb is believed to be the soul of a departed person).

Glenbrook Ravine Park New Westminster

This park is located at the edge of the former BC Penitentiary site. Neighborhood residents have seen the glowing figure of a man walking across the hill. Gun shots have also been heard at the top of the hill. It is believed that this is the spirit of a man who was shot in the park in the late 1980s.

Woodlands School New Westminster

East of Glenbrook Ravine Park is the site of Woodlands School which was closed down in 1996. Opened in 1878 as the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, it was changed over to a residential school/home for the mentally disabled in 1950. Former nurses and health care workers reported hearing doors opening and closing for no apparent reason or children’s’ voices at night when the residents were sleeping. In 1970, the provincial government ordered all the headstones removed from the graveyard and sold to developers and unsuspecting homeowners. Many people who used these stones for walkways or driveways began to experience paranormal activity in their homes. Once the source was discovered, several people took the stones back to Woodlands for re-burial.

The Keg Restaurant New Westminster

In the downtown core of New Westminster, the former CP Rail station was sold to the Keg restaurant in 1973. Employees have reported an uneasy feeling down in the basement and a voice calling them by name. In the upstairs bar area, footsteps have been heard after hours when nobody is up there. Glasses have been known to fall from securely anchored racks. After closing time, an employee had left the room after putting the chairs on top of the tables for the janitorial staff. When he returned a short time later, the chairs were back down on the floor and no other employee had been there. The restrooms seem to have problems with the lights shutting off for no apparent reason and the water taps shutting on and off. Once in a while staff and patrons can smell smoke and see smoky figures which are believed to be reminiscent of the great fire of 1898.

Met Hotel New Westminster

The Met Hotel in downtown New Westminster is a heritage building that also survived the great fire. Guests have seen a man and lady elegantly dressed in white old-fashioned clothing shrouded by a glowing light. They have been frequently spotted on the fourth floor but more often seen chatting to each other near the elevator. Another ghost is believed to be George who was a long time resident who died in the building. He has been sighted floating down the halls and walking through walls.

Irving House Museum New Westminster

The Irving House Museum was the former home of the Irving family from 1862 to the 1950s. Staff and visitors have seen the ghost of Captain William Irving, the man who built the house, sleeping in his old bed where he passed away. Sometimes, the imprint of a body can be seen on the bed. Footsteps can be heard for no apparent reason and some staff members have heard a voice calling their name. Several visitors have reported animal heads on display turning their heads.

New Westminster Secondary School

At the New Westminster Secondary School, a male student drowned in the pool in the early 1970s. Night security personnel have seen the image of a boy floating in the pool plus the spirit of a man using a bow and arrows in the basement archery range. Another student died in the woodworking shop in the late 1980s. His ghost has been seen walking around the room at night. Orbs have been seen in the music room for no apparent reason.

New Westminster 12th Street

On the west side of New Westminster, on 12th Street, a 13 year-old girl committed suicide. Her ghost has been seen walking along this same street. It is also believed a music recording studio in that area is haunted because screams can be heard from that location.

I too have seen a glowing figure passing horizontaly along the slope of Glenbrooke ravine park.At first ,thinking it was someone with a lantern, but upon much observation it still baffles me.Daytime revealed absolutely no path but thick, thick blacberries. It didn't really 'spook' me as I still like to walk down there. It is indeed a very peaceful place to retreat from the city noise.Come to think of it,I even set my telescope upon the site and there are,or were, lights very definitely down there. This was about 8-10 yr ago, before the occasional homeless person passed through.I no longer live bordering the ravine, but still visit there.

Thank you for sharing your experience at Glenbrook Ravine. Lots of history in that area with Woodlands and the Pen.

Just today, there was a huge fire that burned down the admin buildings at Woodlands. Those are the ones at the front of the lot overlooking the river.

I had the opportunity to go into the basement of the New West Keg restaurant recently and was completely unnerved at the feeling I got down there. The old New West Tunnels are still accessible. I was alone down there and while looking into, without venturing in as I had no flashlight at the time, the tunnel leading to an old well, I had the unnerving experience that SOMETHING was coming to get me. I've been in "scary" situations before and deal with high stress situations every day, but this was completely different. I was completely unprepared for the feeling of utter dread I felt while I was down there!
I would LOVE to learn more about the old New West Penitentiary tunnels and the New West tunnels in general!

There is not and never has been a pool at New Westminster Secondary School. No-one drowned there, since there was no pool. There also is no "basement archery range". Like most so-called sightings, this is just pure fiction.

I went to New Westminster Secondary and also verify that there was no pool.

I am currently a student at New Westminster Secondary and I know for a fact that my school does not have a pool, nor has ever had one. The former shooting range is commonly mistaken as a pool for people that have heard stories of it. Again I must clear up that NWSS DOES NOT have a pool

just to let you all know. I work at massey theatre, with many people that are past students. There was infact a pool....which was shut down. An archery pit and a shooting range. I've seen where they previously were and have been shut down due to many problems...ie deaths.

A site not mentioned in this compilation is the Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster. A few weeks ago, my roommate and I went to the cemetery. We didn't really notice anything out of the norm until we were about to leave. We walked past a row of headstones that belonged to young children. There was one stone from the 1930's that stood out because it was quite elaborate. It reads "Budded on Earth to Bloom in Heaven". I read it quietly and walked past. My roommate paused and read it aloud. Right after she read the phrase aloud, we both clearly heard a child giggling. The sounds seemed to be coming from right behind us - yet the cemetery was completely empty.

Pure nonsense. My sisters attended New West Secondary (then known as Vincent Massey Jr High and Lester Pearson Sr High)when they were brand new, followed by me, and I can say without any doubt that there was NEVER a pool, period. Also, I happened to have to go to the cemetery office a couple of weeks ago, so I asked the guys who work there about ghosts. They said someone had come by and tried to get them to say they have seen ghosts, but they have never ever seen anything even vaguely unusual, never mind "ghosts". I guess you see what you want to see. NO GHOSTS.

To clarify, the pool was most likely located where Mercer Stadium now stands. People mistakingly say it was a part of the school because of the close proximity and because students did use it (hence the local swim team's name being "The Hyacks" as are all NWSS team names).
The hauntings at the school could be attributed to the fact that the school was actually built on a cemetery used during the 1917 Influenza Epidemic. Perhaps the spirits were unnerved when their bodies were disturbed to build the school?

More baloney. My mother's sister died in the flu epidemic just after world war one. She was buried in Fraser Cemetery on Richmond Street, which was there then and is still there. There was no special cemetery for flu victims where Mercer Stadium stands. Why do people have to try to justify their mistakes by making up "facts"?

Notice how the story is adjusted as the facts contradict it?

The name Hyacks has nothing whatsoever to do with anything near the school. It is a relatively recent name change; prior to the amalgamation of the two schools (junior and senior highs) the high school team was called the "Mikes", after Lester Pearson's nickname. The school was called Lester Pearson High School. The name "Hyack" was chosen because the former May Day celebration adopted the name "Hyack Festival" after the Hyack Anvil Battery. Some people should spend more time in the archives and less time dreaming about non-existent ghosts.

To clarify, the cemetery was not "special" for the Flu victims, it was closed during that time. The school is built on an old cemetery and the school board is now having issue re-building because of it.
And the pool has been a rumour that has circulated forever...IF one existed near that area, it would have most likely been where Mercer Stadium now stands.
Some of us have done our research, thank you.

I love the old mental hospital. Except that the security guards would always get mad at me when I went down there. By the way the faces spotted in the windows were probably just people that sneaked in. Even so, that place is scary.

i work with individuals who used to be residents of the old Woodlands. it's really sad to hear these stories about abuses. now that i am working with these individuals, it is my duty to give them quality care that they may have never experienced at Woodlands.
the first time i saw the remains of woodlands, it just gave me goosebumps. it's a very beautiful building overlooking the Fraser river but we will never know what exactly happened within the confines of the walls of the building... may the souls of the dearly departed rest in peace...

Quote: "At the New Westminster Secondary School, a male student drowned in the pool in the early 1970s. Night security personnel have seen the image of a boy floating in the pool plus the spirit of a man using a bow and arrows in the basement archery range." Since there was/is neither a pool nor an archery range, how do you figure you have done your research? Or doesn't the above quote count anymore?

There was a pool in the field at the high school. No one that I know of has been in the basement so there could be an archery range.
A few years ago a music teacher committed suicide in his home. From what I heard he had slept with one of his students. That could explain the orbs in the music room, if they were seen after his death

I go to Ndub (NWSS) and I heard about a girl who was flirting with a band teacher (Mr. Joel . . . something like that) but he didn't like her. After class one day, she went up to him and kissed him. He really wasn't interested. Somehow, the subject came up and she lied and said that he kissed her. There was an investigation and he almost lost his job. He ended up hanging himself. After his death, she told the truth--she kissed him.
All of the stuff on the Internet I've been looking at has almost the exact same phrasing of information about the "ghosts" at Ndub. The boy who drowned in the pool, the death at the archery/shooting range, the woodshop, the orbs in the music room. So I don't think it's real or anyone's done their research. I know there wasn't a pool in the first three or so years at Ndub. I'm still talking to former students. The truth is so hard to find.
There's a basement???

Firstly, there was not a pool in the school however, it was located where Mercer stadium now sits. And yes, the school WAS built on an old graveyard, it was a Chinese graveyard (New West was the home of the first North American Chinatown, where New West Skytrain station is now located). Hence why the school is having problems with its relocation project. Some residents of New West want to see the graveyard salvaged. I am a historian by hobby and have done a great deal of research into this so I can verify these facts. As to whether or not those places are haunted, that's up to you to decide.

Please provide the reference dates so we can look at the newspaper archives in the public library to verify these "deaths". A drowning at a public school and a death in the woodworking shop would certainly have been reported.
